HOW THE NATO SIMULATION WORKS

The NATO simulation is structured around the following arrangements:

  • Every participating institution represents one or more NATO Member States.
  • Each NATO Member State delegation is made up of at least 5 students and, whenever possible, is joined by a faculty advisor.
  • Before the conference, every delegation receives preparatory material from the sponsors, including the Delegation Handbook, relevant NATO publications and a preliminary agenda.
  • Delegates are encouraged to build on these materials with their own research and, where possible, classroom instruction, so their preparation is stronger.
  • Upon arriving in Washington, DC, each delegation is briefed at the Embassy of the country it represents.
  • The sponsors appoint qualified student delegates to chair the deliberations of each committee.
  • The sponsors assign participating university and college professors to act as faculty advisors and resource persons in each committee.
  • The Model recreates the deliberations of NATO as they unfold at its meetings, through debates, negotiations and similar exchanges.
  • Alongside its adopted agenda, the Model simulates an ongoing crisis that is revealed during the event.
